If you go to Iowa and don't seen a college football game, did you really go to Iowa after all?
In all serious, one of my favorite Iowa memories was getting to see the University of Iowa Hawkeyes play the Iowa State University Cyclones at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. If you're from the Midwest, you know that this game is a BIG DEAL.
Do you know what's even better than the actual game? Two words: Tail. Gate. Good music, better drinks and lots of school spirit made for a fun-filled day that made me question what other quintessential college experiences I missed out on when I chose my fancy-pants liberal arts school over the more traditional state school.
To top it all off, the Hawks (my adopted team) won the game!
Disclaimer: Choosing to be a Hawks fan was an extremely arbitrary decision based solely on my preference for the colors black and yellow.

When it comes to Des Moines dive bars, the choice is clear: Carl's, Carl's, Carl's. Did I mention I like Carl's? Carl's, short for Carl's Place is a cozy Des Moines fixture that seems to have transcended multiple generations of the DSM party scene.
If you visit Carl's during a presidential year, you are likely to run into campaign staffers and even the occasional presidential candidate (see photo Martin O'Malley lovin' him some Carl's). Not bad for a place that sells $1 beers!
